Overview

The project comprised the comprehensive refurbishment and reconfiguration of three existing science classrooms to form a connected laboratory facility. Works were undertaken within a live university environment and required careful coordination to ensure minimal disruption to surrounding teaching spaces.

BSN Group was appointed by Aston University to deliver the fast-track refurbishment of three science teaching rooms located on the 5th Floor of the Main Building. The project involved the transformation of Rooms MB530A, MB532 and MB534 into a modern, interconnected laboratory environment designed to enhance practical learning, teaching flexibility and student collaboration.The scheme formed part of Aston University's ongoing investment in its educational facilities, creating a high-specification laboratory space equipped with modern finishes, specialist teaching infrastructure and upgraded building services to support current and future academic requirements.

Solution

The refurbishment was delivered in a live teaching environment on a fast‑track programme, requiring tight planning and close collaboration between Aston University, BSN Group and specialist subcontractors. Integrating laboratory facilities, acoustic treatments, ventilation systems and safety equipment within existing spaces demanded precise coordination across architectural, mechanical and electrical disciplines. Works were carefully sequenced to keep multiple trades operating efficiently while maintaining quality and safety. The new MVHR system and acoustic solutions were also designed to improve environmental performance and teaching comfort without compromising the existing building infrastructure.

The completed project has transformed three separate science classrooms into a contemporary, interconnected laboratory facility that supports a wide range of teaching and practical learning activities.

The new Trespa workstations, upgraded laboratory furniture, hygienic storage solutions and integrated eyewash stations have significantly improved the functionality and safety of the teaching environment. The installation of specialist sound systems and acoustic baffles has enhanced the quality of lectures and demonstrations, while the new MVHR system provides improved ventilation, occupant comfort and energy performance.

Delivered successfully within the fast-track programme, the refurbishment provides Aston University with a modern, flexible and future-ready laboratory space that supports both academic excellence and an enhanced student experience.
